Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)

Unclassified US government information that still requires safeguarding or dissemination controls under law or policy.

Information created or possessed by the U.S. government, or by organizations on its behalf, that is not classified but requires safeguarding or dissemination controls under law, regulation, or government-wide policy. Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) includes categories such as procurement-sensitive information, export-controlled technical data, personally identifiable information (PII), and certain critical infrastructure or legal information. Contractors that store, process, or transmit CUI must comply with applicable security, marking, handling, storage, and access requirements, including NIST SP 800-171 where required by contract. Protection of CUI is also a foundational requirement of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program for many Department of Defense contractors.
