A U.S. federal law that provides the President with authorities to ensure the timely availability of industrial resources needed for national defense and other designated national security purposes. The Defense Production Act (DPA) authorizes the federal government to require companies to prioritize and accept certain government contracts and orders, allocate critical materials and resources, and provide financial incentives, such as loans, loan guarantees, purchase commitments, and investments, to expand domestic industrial capacity. Although enacted for defense preparedness, the DPA has also been used to strengthen supply chains and respond to national emergencies, including public health crises and critical infrastructure needs.
