An independent oversight official within a U.S. federal agency responsible for promoting economy, efficiency, effectiveness, and integrity in government operations. Offices of Inspector General (OIGs) conduct audits, inspections, evaluations, and investigations to detect and prevent fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct involving agency programs, contracts, grants, and operations. In government contracting, IG reports and investigations may examine procurement practices, contractor performance, compliance with laws and regulations, and the stewardship of public funds. Each federal agency has its own Inspector General established under the Inspector General Act of 1978, with independence from agency management to ensure objective oversight.
