A Preliminary Design Review (PDR) is a formal systems engineering technical review that evaluates whether a system’s preliminary design satisfies its documented requirements and is sufficiently mature to proceed to detailed design. Conducted after requirements analysis and initial architectural development, the PDR examines system architecture, design concepts, interfaces, technical risks, requirements traceability, and engineering analyses. Successful completion of the PDR demonstrates that the proposed design is technically feasible, adequately addresses performance requirements, and provides a sound foundation for detailed design, implementation, and subsequent reviews such as the Critical Design Review (CDR).
