Prime contract

A contract awarded directly to a contractor who is legally responsible for delivery and for managing any subcontractors.

A contract awarded directly by a government agency to a contractor, known as the prime contractor, who is legally responsible for performing the work and fulfilling all contractual requirements. The prime contractor serves as the government’s primary point of contact and is accountable for contract performance, compliance, reporting, and delivery of products or services. While the prime contractor may engage one or more subcontractors to perform portions of the work, it retains overall responsibility for managing subcontractors and ensuring that all contract obligations are met.
