Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR)

A US R&D programme funding small businesses to develop technologies in formal partnership with a nonprofit research institution.

A federal research and development (R&D) program that funds small businesses to develop innovative technologies in partnership with a qualifying nonprofit research institution, such as a university or federally funded research and development center (FFRDC). The Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program is similar to the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program but requires a formal collaboration between the small business and its research partner. Under STTR rules, the small business must perform at least 40% of the work, while the research institution must perform at least 30%, promoting the transfer of scientific research into commercially viable products and technologies.
