A numerical classification system used to identify the primary industry or business activity of an organisation. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes group businesses into defined industry sectors, enabling governments, regulators, and businesses to classify organisations consistently for statistical analysis, procurement, taxation, and regulatory purposes. Although SIC codes remain widely used in some contexts, they have been replaced or supplemented by more modern classification systems in many jurisdictions, such as the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) in North America and the Standard Industrial Classification (UK SIC) used by Companies House in the United Kingdom.
