(U.S. Government contracting) A written order issued by the Government directing a contractor to suspend all or part of the work under a contract for a specified period. Stop-Work Orders are typically used to address funding, technical, programmatic, or procurement issues while preserving the contract. When the order is lifted, the contractor resumes performance or, if appropriate, the contract may be modified or terminated.
